Since we’re involved with transportation within the film industry, we take an interest in movie vehicles. Here we look at a few of the most famous cars that have graced our screens:
The car itself was already infamous. When initially sold, new owners couldn’t close the gull-wing doors because they weren’t tall enough – the car was designed around John DeLorean’s 6’4” build – and the project was a financial disaster. Thanks to the Back to the Future franchise, it became a star in its own right despite the fact it was transformed into a time machine that needed plutonium to reach 88mph.
At GT Film Transport, we agree this car is synonymous with one of the best chase scenes ever filmed. There is no score over the action, just the sound of the Mustang and a Dodge Charger speeding around the San Francisco streets. The design wasn’t favoured at the time, but the movie increased its popularity, along with the advertising campaign for the Ford Puma in 1997. The original Mustang from Bullitt was sold at auction in 2020 for £2.6m.
When conducting our location support and film logistics services in and around London, we do spot the occasional four-wheeled movie star. We picked this because it’s got our name in it! This car truly is a thing of beauty and an absolute rarity. Of the 56 that Ferrari produced, only 37 had the covered headlights. The film used three replica models – with Chevrolet engines - which are also highly sought after. One sold at auction in 2020 for $396,000. An original California Spyder went under the hammer for the very first time in 2016, selling at $17m.
Starring in the first James Bond movie and making a comeback in No Time To Die, the Aston Martin DB5 is probably the most well-known movie vehicle. Having seen these models as part of our film logistics services, we can confirm they are as stunning in real life as they are on the screen. Fun fact: Corgi brought out a ‘James Bond Goldfinger 60s DB5’ model in 1965, and is a prized possession of collectors due to its unique colour.
